Islamabad: Former Prime Minister and Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Makhdoom Yousaf Raza Gillani, marked the anniversary of July 5, 1977, by calling it a ‘Dark Day’ in Pakistan’s history, reflecting on the unlawful overthrow of the constitutional government led by Quaid-e-Awam Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Gillani stressed the detrimental impact of this event on the nation’s democratic institutions and constitutional framework.
According to Senate of Pakistan, Gillani highlighted the significance of the 1973 Constitution, drafted under Bhutto’s leadership, as a cornerstone for Pakistan’s survival and stability. He emphasized that the suspension of this Constitution on July 5 led the country into a period of dictatorship, undermining the federation and the democratic ethos of Pakistan.
Gillani also paid homage to the sacrifices made by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, alongside Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) members, who faced severe reprisals in their struggle for democracy. He reiterated the enduring legacy of the Bhuttos in promoting democratic principles and vowed to uphold the sanctity of the Parliament and the Constitution.
In his message, the Chairman Senate underscored the importance of reaffirming commitment to democratic values, warning against compromising the sovereignty of the Constitution and the will of the people. He concluded by affirming the Senate’s dedication to fostering national stability through a robust parliamentary system and continuous democratic governance.
