Kolkata: Widespread protests continue across India following the passage of the controversial Waqf amendment bill. Opposition parties, along with Muslim and other organizations, have strongly condemned the bill, labeling it as discriminatory against minorities and unconstitutional.
Within hours of the bill’s approval, protests swept the entire country. Demonstrations were held in cities like Kolkata, Ranchi, and Ahmedabad, where large crowds took to the streets to voice their opposition.
Indian police faced criticism for using force against unarmed protesters, with reports indicating that over 50 individuals were arrested. In Kolkata, intense protests erupted with demonstrators chanting slogans demanding the withdrawal of the Waqf Bill.
The all-India Muslim Personal Law Board has expressed strong opposition to the bill, describing it as a grave threat to Islamic values, religious freedom, and the constitutional rights of minorities in India.
The board has announced plans for nationwide campaigns, including peaceful protests, legal challenges, and public gatherings to contest the bill.
Numerous political leaders have also taken legal action, filing petitions in the Indian Supreme Court and High Courts to challenge the bill’s constitutionality.
