Lahore: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has mandated improved cleanliness efforts in cooperative and private housing societies throughout Punjab, emphasizing enhancements in the Suthra Punjab programme. According to Chief Minister of Punjab, during a special review meeting, Sharif instructed the implementation of uniform dustbins and garbage bags in commercial areas and set specific times for waste removal. She also called for the roads to be cleaned at 5 a.m. and for the monitoring of cleanliness in streets and neighborhoods.

Sharif underscored the importance of punctual payments to Suthra Punjab workers by the fifth of each month and required monthly reports from companies on the status of these payments. She also urged for the prompt settlement of any outstanding dues to contractors. Additionally, she directed the provision of door-to-door waste collection and mandated monitoring by the Additional Deputy Commissioners (Social Services) throughout the province.

The chief minister also ordered specific attention to cleanliness in educational institutions, healthcare facilities, parks, and green belts, along with urban areas around railway tracks. She instructed that entry and exit points of cities be maintained daily. Furthermore, Sharif called for regular meetings between deputy commissioners and relevant contractors to ensure compliance with cleanliness standards.

In aiming to improve performance, Sharif announced the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to assess efforts at every level, from workers to officers. She noted that contractors should be given a 24-hour window to rectify any SOP violations before fines are imposed, emphasizing that the goal is cleanliness rather than penalties.

Expressing personal commitment to the Suthra Punjab initiative, Sharif highlighted the need for continuous improvement and acknowledged better performances in cities such as Lahore, Khanewal, and Murree. However, she urged other cities like Faisalabad and Sialkot to enhance their efforts. The chief minister concluded the meeting by scheduling another review session in seven days to evaluate progress on the directives issued.
