Cabinet Committee Reviews Railways’ Rightsizing Plans


Islamabad: A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Rightsizing, chaired by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, focused on the Ministry of Railways’ rightsizing plan. The committee reviewed ongoing measures to streamline federal ministries and discussed the progress of the Railways’ initiative to enhance operational efficiency.



According to a statement by Press Information Department, the meeting at the Finance Division saw participation from Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Mr. Ali Parvez Malik, Members of the National Assembly, Federal Secretaries, and senior officers from relevant ministries. The Establishment Division reported that confirmations were received from 29 ministries and one constitutional body regarding the abolition of 11,877 posts, alongside 4,660 dying posts.



The Finance Minister commended the ministries and departments for their efforts in implementing the committee’s decisions. The Ministry of Railways provided an overview of its rightsizing initiatives, revealing that 17,101 out of 95,859 sanctioned posts have been abolished, with 5,695 more in the process of being removed. An additional 15,000 posts are set to be eliminated in the future.



The presentation highlighted strategies for aligning the ministry’s functions with its core mandate and eliminating redundant positions. Discussions during the meeting underscored the need to modernize Pakistan Railways to ensure efficient and effective operations.



The committee decided to forward the matter to the Sub-Committee on Rightsizing for further review. The meeting concluded with a directive to continue implementing rightsizing measures across federal ministries to achieve efficiency and sustainable policy outcomes.
