Dhaka: In a move signaling a potential shift in foreign policy, Bangladesh has recalled its High Commissioner to India, Mustafizur Rahman, along with six other diplomats from around the world. This action comes as part of a broader diplomatic reshuffle following the end of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime due to street protests.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the decision to withdraw Rahman did not include specific reasons but was part of a directive that asked the diplomat to return to Dhaka immediately. This recall is part of adjustments following the swearing-in of an interim government led by Nobel Peace laureate Mohd Yunus on August 8, indicating a reset in Bangladesh’s foreign policy approach post-Hasina’s administration.
Despite recent efforts by India to strengthen ties with Bangladesh, including bilateral meetings between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohd Touhid Hossain, the recall of Rahman suggests unresolved issues or a new strategic direction under the interim government.
The withdrawal of the High Commissioner comes at a crucial time when both nations are navigating complex regional dynamics, with the reshuffle potentially impacting bilateral relations. The exact implications of this diplomatic move remain to be seen as both countries adjust to the new political landscape in Bangladesh.
