Geneva, The Coordination Committee of Special Procedures, a body of independent experts at the United Nations, has called for an immediate cessation of attacks against UN human rights experts. These experts, who play a pivotal role in addressing global human rights issues, have faced increasing threats and personal attacks that undermine their work and the integrity of the human rights mechanisms.
According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the committee issued a strong condemnation of the harassment faced by these experts, including unfounded allegations, social media vilification, and threats during UN missions. This harassment has been particularly intense against those working on crises in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel, and those dealing with gender-related issues, where experts have faced sexist threats and severe targeting.
The committee emphasized that while debate and diverse viewpoints are a natural part of their work, the line is crossed when criticisms turn into personal attacks, including the dangerous practice of “doxxing,” where personal information like home addresses is maliciously published online. These actions not only pose security risks to the experts and their families but also impact the credibility of the Human Rights Council and the overall UN human rights framework.
The Coordination Committee is urging all stakeholders, especially member states, to support the independence and safety of UN human rights experts to ensure they can continue their critical work without fear of personal attacks.
