Tanveer Calls for Urgent Reforms in Pakistan’s Cotton Sector

ISLAMABAD: In a concerted effort to address the challenges facing Pakistan’s cotton sector, Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has called for accelerated reforms to boost production and enhance farmers’ profitability. The directive was issued during a high-level meeting on the Cotton Revival Strategy held in Islamabad.

According to Radio Pakistan, the minister underscored the importance of making cotton cultivation economically viable for farmers by focusing on improved productivity, quality seed, and reduced production costs. He highlighted that reviving the cotton sector is crucial for bolstering Pakistan’s agricultural economy, supporting the textile industry, and decreasing reliance on imported raw materials.

The meeting examined a three-pronged Cotton Revival Strategy, which includes strengthening locally developed cotton seed, facilitating the import of improved cotton seed, and introducing a fast-track approval mechanism for imported varieties. Rana Tanveer Hussain instructed all relevant institutions to prioritize the implementation of these measures and to submit actionable proposals and recommendations to the Ministry.
