Senate Unanimously Passes Resolution to Address Population Growth in Pakistan

Islamabad: The Senate has unanimously adopted a resolution aimed at addressing Pakistan’s rapid population growth, calling for a coordinated national effort to prevent potential demographic challenges. This resolution emphasizes the need for a comprehensive strategy involving various stakeholders to avert the risks associated with unchecked population expansion.

According to Radio Pakistan, the resolution, introduced by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman, urges the government to collaborate with provincial authorities, lawmakers, officials from both public and private sectors, media professionals, religious leaders, and community figures. The resolution advocates for a nationwide approach to reduce the population growth rate through extensive information campaigns, enhanced family planning services, expansion of the Lady Health Workers Programme, financial incentives, and improved reproductive health services.

In related parliamentary activities, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik addressed the Senate, assuring that issues concerning gas consumers in Balochistan will be resolved. He mentioned coordination with Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti to develop a joint mechanism to tackle these challenges, particularly those related to the slab system.

Additionally, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi clarified his recent visit to Iran, stating it was intended to address an ongoing crisis rather than negotiate a defense agreement. He criticized political figures for allegedly exploiting religious sentiments for personal and political gains.

The Senate session also saw the passage of eight bills, including amendments to educational and insurance laws, among others. Furthermore, several reports were tabled before the Upper House.
