Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the SITE Keamari Urban Forest in District Keamari, marking the start of a significant plantation campaign with a target of planting 25,000 trees. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Al Khair Trust, with additional support from the Forest Department, SITE Industrial Association, district administration, and volunteers.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Barrister Murtaza Wahab highlighted the critical role of trees in ensuring a healthier environment and emphasized the necessity of such plantation activities to reduce carbon dioxide levels. The Mayor described the initiative as a step towards transforming Karachi into a greener and healthier city. He stressed the importance of collaboration among municipal bodies, private sectors, and civil society to protect the newly planted trees from damage, ensuring future generations could benefit.
The Mayor also pointed out that environmental protection requires collective efforts beyond political affiliations. He expressed plans to replicate such urban forests across all 25 towns of Karachi, aiming for widespread plantation. Emphasizing the selection of tree species suitable for the local climate, the Mayor noted that the focus should be on long-term environmental benefits rather than mere beautification.
He concluded by urging the media to promote environmental initiatives, hoping to unite society for this cause. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to participants, acknowledging their contributions to a sustainable future.
