Chennai: In a bold display of growing resentment against the Modi-led BJP government’s policies, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has publicly expressed a lack of trust in New Delhi. He announced the formation of a high-level panel aimed at resisting what he describes as the Center’s increasing encroachments on state autonomy.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Stalin made this announcement while addressing a public gathering, marking a significant pushback against what he perceives as New Delhi’s interference. Observers suggest that the constitution of a panel under a retired Supreme Court judge on state autonomy may be a precursor to Tamil Nadu seeking greater independence.
The high-level committee will be headed by former Supreme Court judge Kurian Joseph. Its task will be to examine in detail the relationship between New Delhi and the state, with a focus on state autonomy.
The committee is expected to submit its interim report in January 2026, with a final report and recommendations due in two years, Stalin informed the state Assembly.
The panel will include former bureaucrat Ashok Vardhan Shetty and former vice-chairman of the State Planning Commission M Naganathan as its members.
“The committee will study the transfer of those subjects that went from the State List to the Concurrent List,” the Chief Minister stated.
