Karachi: Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tesori highlighted the urgent need for increased support and capacity at the Benazir Shaheed ANF Model Addiction Unit and Rehabilitation during his visit on Tuesday. Facing a substantial waiting list of patients seeking treatment for drug addiction, the Governor emphasized the critical role of community and philanthropic involvement in addressing this public health challenge.
According to Sindh Governor House, Governor Tesori disclosed the overwhelming demand for addiction treatment services, with 9,500 individuals currently on the waiting list. The facility’s limited capacity hampers its ability to serve all those in need, prompting the Governor to pledge personal support and to seek assistance from local philanthropists to enhance the center’s capabilities.
During his visit, Governor Tesori engaged with children at the center, participating in activities such as playing Ludo, which underscored his personal commitment to the well-being of the patients. In discussions with the media, he stressed that drug addiction is a national scourge and tackling it should be a collective mission. He outlined the necessity for societal support to expand rehabilitation services and called on philanthropists to contribute to this cause.
Governor Tesori also addressed the need for societal reintegration of individuals recovering from addiction, advocating for respectful and dignified employment opportunities for them. He underscored the importance of community acceptance for those who are returning to normal life post-treatment. Highlighting the broader issues related to drug trafficking, he pointed out the involvement of major mafias and acknowledged the efforts of the anti-narcotics force in combating this menace.
