New York: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif engaged in a meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to Press Information Department, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the IMF’s ongoing support for Pakistan’s economic initiatives and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to executing the IMF-supported reform program. He recognized Georgieva’s contribution to fostering a constructive partnership between Pakistan and the IMF.
The meeting underscored Pakistan’s dedication to its economic reform agenda, with Sharif reiterating the country’s resolve to sustain reform momentum and implement structural measures aimed at strengthening the economy. He noted that despite regional conflicts and external inflationary pressures, Pakistan is transitioning from macroeconomic stabilization towards recovery, supported by prudent fiscal and monetary policies.
Sharif highlighted improvements in fiscal discipline, external financial buffers, and investor confidence, citing the National Tariff Regime and domestic revenue mobilization as key efforts. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable segments of society while maintaining economic reforms.
Georgieva acknowledged Pakistan’s performance under the IMF program and the government’s efforts toward economic stabilization, noting the tangible results achieved. The discussion also covered Pakistan’s upcoming IMF program review and the continued cooperation between Pakistan and the Fund in advancing reforms and supporting sustainable growth.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sen. Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Advisor on Privatization Muhammad Ali, SAPM Tariq Fatemi, and other senior officials attended the meeting.
