Islamabad: The first meeting of the LPG Committee under the recently approved deregulated framework was held, chaired by the Secretary of Petroleum, where Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik underscored the government’s commitment to resolving public concerns over LPG accessibility and pricing.
According to Press Information Department, the Federal Minister emphasized that this initiative aims to serve the public interest by tackling issues faced by consumers struggling to obtain LPG at reasonable prices. The proposed auction mechanism is designed to enhance the resilience of the supply chain, bolster energy infrastructure, and ensure the fair distribution of local LPG while safeguarding vulnerable groups.
Under the new framework, indigenous LPG producers are required to allocate 10 percent of their production to state-owned marketing companies for remote areas, with the remaining 90 percent offered through transparent media-covered auctions. This strategy seeks to enhance LPG access, specifically in remote and underserved regions, while promoting broader market involvement.
The Committee, led by the Secretary of Petroleum, includes the Chairman of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the Managing Director of Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), the Managing Director of Pakistan State Oil (PSO), the President of United Energy Pakistan Limited (UEP), and the Director General of Liquefied Gases.
During the session, it was resolved that a maximum allocation of 20 metric tons per day would be permitted for each company in the auction, ensuring equitable opportunities for all qualified participants.
It was also decided that daily LPG production would be meticulously monitored, with production data submitted to the Prime Minister to maintain effective oversight of supply conditions.
Ali Pervaiz Malik reiterated that the goal is to provide equal opportunities and a fair playing field for all participating companies, while enhancing LPG access for consumers.
This inaugural meeting signifies a crucial step in implementing the LPG auction framework, sanctioned by the Federal Cabinet on November 4, 2026. The Committee is tasked with overseeing indigenous LPG auctions, reviewing market supply strategies, and periodically assessing pricing and bidding procedures.
