Pakistan and Qatar Urged to Facilitate US-Iran Negotiations, Says Former Ambassador

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Qatar must work collaboratively to encourage Iran and the United States to return to diplomatic negotiations and avert military conflict, stated Sardar Masood Khan, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, China, and the United Nations, and former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan, in a recent television interview, highlighted that President Donald Trump was considering either escalating military actions or pursuing a diplomatic resolution with Iran. While the United States was applying economic and strategic pressure on Iran’s trade routes, diplomatic channels were also being explored. He noted that the Republican Party’s political losses in the US midterm elections had increased pressure on the administration, making military confrontation a more challenging option.

Khan pointed out that Vice President J.D. Vance was supporting diplomatic efforts, and Gulf countries were advising against war, which could have widespread repercussions. He mentioned China’s involvement with the US and the five-point Pakistan-China initiative aimed at ending hostilities and ensuring civilian protection and navigational freedom.

Khan explained that diplomacy was gaining traction, with Pakistan actively mediating to build trust and lay the groundwork for negotiations, while Qatar was handling detailed diplomatic arrangements between Iran and the US. He emphasized Pakistan’s unique diplomatic standing in Tehran, Riyadh, and Washington as a significant advantage.

He warned that military action against Iran could lead to broader conflict and potential nuclear escalation. On the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, Khan underscored the need for restoring navigational freedom and adhering to maritime law, referencing Qatar’s proposal to reopen the Strait to international shipping and resume nuclear negotiations.

Khan stated that successful negotiations would demand confidence-building and flexibility from both sides, with Pakistan playing a vital role in fostering trust. He encouraged Islamabad to continue constructive engagement with the US, maintaining bipartisan relations despite the election outcomes.

In conclusion, Khan urged Pakistan to stay committed to its mediatory efforts, noting that acknowledgment of its role by both parties would contribute to regional stability and global peace and security.
