President Zardari Denounces IIOJK Legislative Assembly Polls, Calls for Plebiscite

Islamabad: In a significant political stance, President Asif Ali Zardari has denounced the recent elections for the Legislative Assembly in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), labeling them as inadequate in addressing the Kashmiri people’s aspirations for self-determination. During a meeting with a delegation of IIOJK migrants, the President called on the international community to hold accountable the Modi government for its human rights violations in the region and reiterated Pakistan’s support for a UN-mandated plebiscite.

According to Press Information Department, President Zardari expressed these views while conversing with IIOJK migrants led by Mr. Uzair Ahmed Ghazali at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Wednesday. He condemned the elections as part of India’s strategy to further legitimize its occupation and criticized efforts by India to change the demographic structure of the region. The President emphasized that such actions could neither legitimize the occupation nor quell the Kashmiri freedom movement.

President Zardari highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the Kashmiri people under Indian rule, noting the imprisonment of Kashmiri leadership aimed at silencing their voices. He stated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Kashmiri cause on moral, political, and diplomatic fronts until they achieve their right to self-determination.

Furthermore, the President addressed the issues faced by Kashmiri refugees in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), promising to enhance their subsistence allowances and include 8000 migrant families in the Benazir Income Support Programme to improve their socio-economic conditions.

The delegation thanked the President for his robust support and also appreciated the efforts of Mr. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party and former Foreign Minister, for his advocacy for the Kashmiri people at various international platforms.
