Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, has highlighted the significant yet underutilized potential of Pakistan’s aquaculture sector during a national workshop held in Islamabad. Drawing attention to the country’s extensive coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone, the Minister expressed concern over the slow progress in maximizing these resources for economic development.
According to a statement by Press Information Department, Mr. Sheikh emphasized the importance of prioritizing aquaculture as a key growth sector. He identified several challenges that need to be addressed, including regulatory obstacles, outdated practices, and limited technological advancements. The Minister also stressed the necessity of meeting international hygiene and safety standards to gain access to global markets, citing concerns raised by countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the US over the hygiene standards of Pakistan’s seafood exports.
During the workshop, the Minister called for an end to the use of prohibited fishing methods that harm marine life and attract international criticism. He urged the streamlining of regulations to attract foreign investment and encouraged the youth to pursue entrepreneurship in aquaculture. The event brought together various stakeholders, including fish hatchery operators, farmers, and government organizations, to discuss strategies for modernizing the sector and boosting seafood exports.
The fisheries sector, although contributing a modest 0.31% to Pakistan’s GDP, plays a crucial role in food security and livelihoods for coastal communities. During FY2024, total fish production reached 720,900 metric tons, underscoring the growing global demand for Pakistan’s seafood exports.
Mr. Sheikh announced ongoing discussions with Saudi and US investors to enhance trade and investment in aquaculture. He highlighted incentives, such as affordable plots for fish processing plants, to stimulate sector growth. The workshop concluded with a call for collaboration among stakeholders to transform Pakistan’s aquaculture into a competitive global industry.
