Islamabad: The ongoing instability in Lebanon and the unresolved tensions between the United States and Iran have highlighted the necessity of sustained diplomatic efforts, according to Sardar Masood Khan, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, China, and the United Nations, and former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He warned that regional peace remains fragile despite ongoing negotiations.
According to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Ambassador Masood Khan, developments in Lebanon have added complexity to the regional crisis. He pointed out that Israel has been pursuing its security objectives in southern Lebanon amid the broader conflict, with military operations continuing despite discussions on ceasefire arrangements.
Ambassador Masood Khan highlighted the humanitarian impact of these hostilities, noting significant displacement and loss of life. He stated that the ongoing military actions, alongside diplomatic talks, have made it challenging to establish confidence in ceasefire mechanisms and peace efforts.
Regarding the US-Iran dispute, he noted that President Donald Trump is under political pressure concerning any prospective agreement with Tehran. While President Trump has shown optimism about diplomatic progress, competing political considerations complicate efforts to finalize an understanding.
Ambassador Masood Khan mentioned that the Memorandum of Understanding being discussed offers a framework for de-escalation and future negotiations, although challenges remain, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief.
He referenced the core issues previously addressed in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), emphasizing the need for a new framework that satisfies both Washington and Tehran while providing political justification for all parties involved.
On the nuclear issue, he suggested practical options like limiting uranium enrichment and implementing monitoring mechanisms, acknowledging differences over restrictions and verification measures but expressing confidence that these can be overcome with political will.
The former ambassador stressed the Memorandum of Understanding is a framework, not a final settlement, with detailed negotiations on nuclear issues and implementation still required.
Ambassador Masood Khan also commented on Israel’s position, suggesting that some Israeli leaders may prefer confrontation over a US-Iran agreement due to concerns about Iran’s capabilities and alliances.
He concluded by emphasizing Pakistan’s critical role as a facilitator, highlighting Islamabad’s efforts to maintain communication channels, encourage compromise, and support a diplomatic outcome to reduce tensions and prevent wider conflict.
