Pakistan’s Climate Minister Stresses SDG Goals for Future Stability

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Senator Musadik Masood Malik, has reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a means to achieve climate resilience and enhance human well-being. During a high-level meeting with a five-member UNDP-Pakistan delegation, Malik emphasized the importance of the SDGs as practical tools for building resilient economies and protecting ecosystems.

Senator Malik highlighted that the SDGs are integral to Pakistan’s climate policy and development agenda. He stressed the necessity for integrated efforts across various sectors to ensure meaningful progress. “The SDGs provide a clear framework for addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality,” Malik stated.

The meeting, chaired by Senator Malik, included a briefing from UNDP-Pakistan’s country representative Samuel Rizk, who discussed the country’s progress on SDG targets concerning climate change, education, health, and gender equality. Malik underscored the need for collaboration with civil society, the private sector, academia, and international partners to achieve these targets.

Aisha Humera Moriani, Secretary of the Ministry, elaborated on initiatives being implemented in collaboration with national and international organizations to achieve SDG goals. She explained the ministry’s efforts to align climate strategies with the SDG agenda, ensuring environmentally sound and socially equitable development.

Both parties discussed future initiatives in agriculture, waste-to-energy, renewable energy, and green industry, agreeing to boost collaboration in these areas. Malik noted the urgency of investments in clean energy, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable urban development as priorities for sustainable growth and climate resilience.
