New York City: Pakistan has called for a renewed, comprehensive, and proactive global response to terrorism, emphasizing the need for international cooperation and regional synergies to counter the global threat.

According to Radio Pakistan, the call was made by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during the Security Council briefing titled “Threats to International Peace and Security Caused by Terrorist Acts: Twenty-five years after 9/11: Renew the Security Council’s Fight Against Terrorism.” The Ambassador stressed Pakistan’s significant role as a frontline state in the global counter-terrorism efforts, highlighting the country’s notable successes against Al-Qaida, achieved through extensive cooperation and at a great cost.

The Ambassador reported that over 90,000 Pakistanis, including security forces and civilians, have lost their lives in the nation’s fight against terrorism. He emphasized the need to address gaps in the UN Security Council’s sanctions regimes, which he described as insufficient to combat the evolving nature of terrorism.

Ambassador Ahmad also pointed out the emerging dimensions of terrorism, such as the rise of far-right extremist movements, threats in Africa, the Middle East, and Afghanistan, and the use of modern technologies in terrorist activities. He urged the United Nations to ensure accountability for state terrorism in occupied regions and stressed the importance of not allowing occupying powers to suppress legitimate struggles for self-determination.
