Pakistan Reiterates Opposition to New Permanent UNSC Seats

New York: Pakistan has reaffirmed its stance against the addition of new permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), citing concerns over creating further divisions within the global organization.

During the fourth informal meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on the Question of Equitable Representation on and Increase in the Membership of the Security Council, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Iqbal Jadoon, expressed the country’s position. He emphasized that establishing new centers of privilege within the UN lacks justification.

Ambassador Jadoon articulated Pakistan’s vision for a more democratic Council, advocating for reforms that align with the interests of the broader UN membership. He stressed that the focus should not be on a select few self-appointed states.

Pakistan supports the United for Consensus (UfC) proposal, which suggests increasing the number of non-permanent members, ensuring equitable geographical representation. This approach, according to Jadoon, offers the best path forward for accountability and inclusivity.

The statement underscores Pakistan’s commitment to a reformed Security Council that better reflects the diverse perspectives of the international community.
