Pakistan Facilitates Historic Diplomatic Talks Between U.S. and Iran

Islamabad: Pakistan has orchestrated a significant diplomatic achievement by bringing the United States and Iran to direct talks, despite mounting tensions in the region. Sardar Masood Khan, former Ambassador to the United States, China, and the United Nations, and former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, described the development as a historic milestone, emphasizing ongoing prospects for continued dialogue.

According to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the initial round of negotiations held in Islamabad marked a success for Pakistan, which managed to convene the two adversaries at the negotiating table. This meeting is seen as a breakthrough where many global powers have previously faltered. The talks were set against the backdrop of a temporary ceasefire, creating a conducive environment for both parties to engage in discussions over complex and sensitive issues, even though no formal agreements were established.

Ambassador Khan highlighted that the talks unfolded in a constructive atmosphere characterized by mutual respect and a willingness to engage, which he deemed a noteworthy achievement. Both delegations reportedly left Islamabad with a better understanding of each other’s positions and renewed confidence in the diplomatic process.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Khan expressed cautious optimism about the future of the negotiations. Despite recent developments, such as a naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz, the ceasefire largely holds, and no direct military confrontation has occurred. He indicated that a second round of talks is likely, with the process described as “evolving.”

Potential areas for compromise include the nuclear framework and governance of the Strait of Hormuz, although issues like ballistic missile limitations and regional alignments pose significant challenges. Iranian demands for reparations and broader regional ceasefire arrangements also add complexity to the negotiations.

Ambassador Khan noted the broader geopolitical context, including tensions in Lebanon and differing priorities between global and regional actors, such as the United States and Israel. He warned that any escalation of the blockade could have severe economic repercussions, potentially triggering global instability.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s role, Ambassador Khan stated that Islamabad continues to engage in quiet diplomacy with key regional players like Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Qatar. He emphasized that Pakistan’s leadership is increasingly trusted on the international stage, positioning the country as an effective mediator.

In his concluding remarks, Ambassador Khan expressed confidence in the diplomatic process initiated by Pakistan. While acknowledging the challenges ahead, he stressed that sustained engagement and strategic patience could transform the current diplomatic momentum into a lasting resolution.
