Pakistan Eyes Role as Regional Leader in Used Textiles Trade

Islamabad: In a recent panel discussion addressing the trade of used textiles and circularity, Pakistan’s Minister of Climate Change outlined the country’s potential to become a regional hub for the industry. The Minister highlighted the natural benefits of used textiles, a resource that has been part of Pakistani life since childhood, and noted that other countries are beginning to benefit from Pakistan’s longstanding practices.

Emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices, the Minister underscored the need for green textiles and the adoption of 100% renewable materials. He warned against the improper reuse of textiles, citing its negative impact on the environment and the food chain, which he described as unsustainable and unacceptable.

The discussion also touched upon the technological challenges facing the industry. The Minister called for a clear definition of recycling and circularity to guide future practices. He also stressed the importance of raising awareness about these issues.

In his concluding remarks, the Minister advocated for a focus on the export and trade of textiles as a means to bolster Pakistan’s economy. He affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to environmental improvement, stating, “We are going green not because of your conditions, but for the future of our generations.” The Minister emphasized that regardless of external support or circumstances, Pakistan is dedicated to advancing its environmental goals.
