Islamabad: Pakistan is taking decisive steps to enhance its waste management systems and promote sustainability through the introduction of a Circular Economy Policy, as revealed by Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change. The policy aims to integrate circular economy principles into national frameworks, encouraging environmentally conscious industrial methods and the use of green technologies.
According to a statement by Press Information Department, Ms. Alam addressed an event titled “Advancing Circular Economy: Pakistan-Türkiye Partnership for Sustainability,” where she underscored the country’s progress in addressing plastic pollution. She highlighted the success of the ban on single-use plastics and polythene bags, which has led to a decrease in plastic bag usage from 80% to 58%.
The circular economy model, which focuses on reducing waste and maximizing resource use, aims to create a sustainable system where materials are continually reused. This approach is intended to conserve natural resources, reduce waste, and lessen environmental impact. Ms. Alam noted that despite these efforts, enforcement challenges persist due to limited capacity, necessitating additional measures like consumer education and alternative options.
Pakistan faces significant waste management challenges, generating around 49.6 million tons of solid waste annually with a yearly increase of over 2.4%. Ms. Alam acknowledged these environmental issues and emphasized that transitioning to a circular economy could offer substantial benefits. However, she noted that achieving true environmental sustainability remains a long-term objective.
In her remarks, Ms. Alam commended Pakistan’s pioneering role in launching the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership program, starting with a pilot project in Islamabad to reduce plastic production. She stressed the importance of private sector involvement in reducing inorganic waste and ensuring safe industrial waste disposal.
Highlighting the partnership with Türkiye, Ms. Alam praised Türkiye’s Zero Waste initiative for its successful outcomes in recycling and waste reduction. She expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s support in sharing best practices and providing advanced equipment for waste management, marking a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.
Ms. Alam concluded by reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and climate justice, aligning with international climate targets and conventions. She extended her appreciation to Türkiye’s leadership for their dedication to environmental protection and expressed hope for continued collaboration between the two nations.
