Pakistan Eager to Strengthen Relations with Russia, Says Energy Minister

Islamabad: Pakistan’s energy minister, Awais Leghari, expressed the country’s strong desire to enhance bilateral relations with Russia, citing significant opportunities for cooperation in various sectors. Leghari, who also co-chairs the Pakistan-Russia Intergovernmental Commission, emphasized the importance of collaboration for regional peace, security, and economic growth.

According to Press Information Department, Leghari highlighted the consistent efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to engage with President Vladimir Putin, demonstrating both nations’ commitment to fostering closer ties. The Intergovernmental Commission, led jointly by Leghari and Russia’s energy minister Sergei Tsivilev, serves as the platform to manage the comprehensive cooperation agenda.

Leghari identified agriculture, food security, energy, tourism, and information technology as key areas with vast potential for partnership between the two countries. He also mentioned the possibility of enhancing trade through new rail connections and integrating Pakistan into the International North-South Transport Corridor.

In a separate discussion, Leghari addressed the Indus Waters Treaty, describing any challenges to Pakistan’s water rights as an “act of war.” He advocated for a return to the treaty’s dispute-resolution mechanism, warning of broader consequences if the issue remains unresolved.
