Pakistan and Russia Explore Pathways to Enhance Bilateral Trade

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia have significant potential to enhance their bilateral trade, according to Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari. Speaking at a webinar in Islamabad focused on Pakistan-Russia relations, Leghari outlined ongoing discussions between the two nations aimed at overcoming obstacles such as the lack of a payment mechanism.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister emphasized the importance of a newly agreed-upon economic cooperation program running until 2030, which is expected to deepen economic relations between the two countries. Leghari highlighted the recent signing of the Russia-Pakistan Readmission Agreement by the Interior Ministers of both countries, an arrangement anticipated to ease the visa regime.

Leghari noted the significance of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent statement recognizing Pakistan as a major global player, as well as the Russian Prime Minister’s comments on the potential connectivity of the International North-South Transport Corridor with Pakistan’s Gwadar Port. This connection could play a crucial role in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Addressing broader geopolitical issues, Leghari stressed Pakistan’s commitment to an inclusive, cooperative international order. He also noted the diplomatic efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in mediating tensions between Iran and the United States, efforts that were acknowledged by Russian leaders.

In conclusion, Leghari expressed optimism for future engagements between Islamabad and Moscow, emphasizing that their relationship should be seen as part of a wider Eurasian collaboration, contributing to regional stability and a balanced global order.
