Islamabad: Pakistan and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting human rights, freedom of religion or belief, rule of law, and interfaith harmony, following a meeting between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Germany’s Commissioner for Freedom of Religion or Belief, Mr. Thomas Rachel.

According to Press Information Department, during the meeting, which was also attended by German Ambassador to Pakistan Ina Lepel, both sides discussed a range of issues including the rule of law, minority rights, freedom of expression, child marriage, forced marriage, and Pakistan’s GSP+ framework with the European Union.

Mr. Rachel praised Pakistan’s efforts in promoting peace and its contributions to United Nations principles and the rule of law. He expressed interest in the legislative and institutional measures Pakistan is undertaking to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. Senator Tarar highlighted the challenges Pakistan has faced due to regional conflicts and terrorism, noting the ongoing efforts to enhance the legal and institutional frameworks for human rights and freedoms.

The discussion included updates on the establishment of the National Commission for Minority Rights and recent developments concerning journalists’ rights and the roles of the National Commission for Human Rights and the National Commission on the Status of Women. Senator Tarar also emphasized the importance of legislation against child marriage and the broader social and health benefits aimed at protecting young girls.

The European Union’s GSP+ framework was described as both a trade facility and an incentive for promoting human rights and institutional reforms in Pakistan. Mr. Rachel stressed the importance of interfaith dialogue and religious tolerance for global peace, highlighting Germany’s diverse religious communities and the need for continuous efforts to improve relations.

The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing on the necessity of international cooperation and dialogue to further human rights, religious freedom, and interfaith harmony.
