GWADAR: Pakistan and China have announced plans to collaborate on developing a modern aquaculture industry in the port city of Gwadar. The initiative, led by China Overseas Ports Holding Company (COPHC), aims to transform Gwadar into a key hub for seafood production and export, enhancing the region’s economic potential.
In a meeting with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, COPHC Chairman Professor Yu Bo presented a detailed business plan. The proposal outlines a strategic vision to create a sustainable, technologically advanced aquaculture sector in Gwadar, positioning it as a significant component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
Minister Chaudhry welcomed the initiative, describing it as a transformative opportunity for coastal development in Pakistan. He highlighted the project’s potential to generate employment, attract investment, and strengthen the local economy. The minister expressed appreciation for COPHC’s commitment to Pakistan’s economic progress and assured full government support for investors seeking to establish operations in the country.
The minister emphasized the importance of developing essential infrastructure, such as reliable electricity, clean drinking water, and improved road connectivity, to support new industries in the region. He noted that Gwadar’s coastline offers immense potential for aquaculture due to favorable sea conditions and proximity to international markets.
The proposed aquaculture industry is expected to include hatcheries, seafood processing facilities, and sustainable aquaculture farms, aiming to meet global quality standards and boost Pakistan’s seafood exports. Minister Chaudhry reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to maritime development, emphasizing the role of aquaculture in enhancing food security and increasing the country’s export footprint.
Both parties agreed to maintain coordination through relevant government departments and technical experts to ensure smooth project implementation. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainable economic growth, environmental responsibility, and regional development through strategic investment and international partnership. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs remains open to business proposals aligned with Pakistan’s long-term economic and environmental goals.
