NEOC Issues Weather Advisory for Pakistan as Strong Westerly Wave Approaches

Islamabad: The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has issued a weather advisory warning of a strong westerly wave expected to impact various regions of Pakistan from February 24 to March 1, 2025. The advisory predicts rain, wind, thunderstorms, and hailstorms, along with snowfall in the northern and western parts of the country.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, Islamabad, upper Punjab, the Pothohar Region, and central and southern/northeastern Punjab are expected to experience inclement weather, including the possibility of flash floods in vulnerable areas. Balochistan is also likely to face rain, wind, and thunderstorms, with snowfall anticipated over the hills in the western, northwestern, and northern parts of the province.

The advisory highlights similar weather conditions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), predicting rain, wind, thunderstorms, and hailstorms, with snowfall over the hills in Upper and Western KP, including the Malakand and Hazara Divisions. The potential for flash flooding and landslides is particularly noted in northern KP.

In Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the forecast includes rain, wind, thunderstorms, and hailstorms, with snowfall over the hills expected to disrupt travel and routine activities. Sindh, on the other hand, is anticipated to experience mostly cold and dry weather.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure a timely response and mitigation efforts. Authorities have issued warnings about potential hazards, particularly heavy snowfall in Murree, Galliyat, and other northern regions, which may impact travelers and tourists. The NDMA encourages the public to use the “Pak NDMA Alert App” for weather updates before traveling.
