Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a hydrological outlook highlighting varied flow levels in Pakistan’s river systems, with potential flash flooding expected in several regions including upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and catchment areas of the Ravi and Chenab rivers. The public is urged to exercise caution and stay updated on weather advisories.
According to Press Information Department, the outlook details low to medium flow levels in several key areas such as the Mangla Dam catchment in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, River Chenab at Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad, and streams of the Pir Panjal Range in northeastern Punjab. Medium flows are anticipated in River Kabul and its tributaries and River Indus at Kalabagh and Chashma, extending to Taunsa and Guddu Barrages.
The forecasted conditions could lead to flash flooding, particularly in the upper divisions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the nullahs of Zhob, Sibi, Nasirabad, and Kalat divisions. Settlements in the flood plains of Chashma-Taunsa and Taunsa-Guddu reaches are particularly at risk and may experience significant impact.
NDMA has activated the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on both Google Play Store and iOS App Store, providing critical alerts, advisories, and guidelines to assist the public in preparing for and responding to flood-related emergencies. Authorities caution against walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters, noting that even six inches of moving water can pose serious hazards.
Residents in affected areas are advised to follow all guidance from local authorities, avoid flood-prone routes, and evacuate promptly if instructed by emergency officials. NDMA has coordinated with relevant departments to ensure that necessary precautions are in place to mitigate the effects of the forecasted extreme weather conditions.
