National ID Cards to Serve as Medical Record Numbers, Announces Health Minister

Islamabad: In a move aimed at streamlining healthcare services, Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal announced that Pakistan’s national identity card numbers will now function as medical record numbers. This initiative, termed “One Patient One ID,” was discussed in a meeting with Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar, Chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

The minister highlighted the absence of comprehensive patient medical data in Pakistan’s healthcare system and emphasized the new system’s potential to provide seamless access to medical records nationwide. This collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health and NADRA seeks to enhance healthcare delivery by enabling medical professionals to access patient information from any location in Pakistan.

Minister Kamal underscored the importance of embracing modern technology to address the growing demand on healthcare services due to population increases. He noted that the majority of patients currently bypass basic health units in favor of larger hospitals, exerting pressure on these facilities.

He also pointed out the potential of digital health services to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of the healthcare system. The initiative includes plans for telemedicine, which will allow doctors and medications to reach patients at home, aiming to extend healthcare access and convenience.

The minister concluded by asserting the government’s commitment to integrating digital health solutions into national policies, marking a shift from traditional healthcare methods.
