Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) has initiated efforts to reconcile with Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, a prominent member of the Lok Sabha representing Srinagar. The move aims to address Mehdi’s concerns on critical issues such as the restoration of Article 370, reservation rules, and the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Mehdi recently led a protest outside the residence of Omar Abdullah, expressing dissatisfaction over the party’s inaction on these issues. Following the protest, Mehdi has notably withdrawn from several official events, maintaining a significant silence.
In response to the potential political implications, senior leaders of the NC, including Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chowdhary and Nasir Aslam Wani, the Chief Minister’s Advisor, engaged in a private meeting with Mehdi. The discussions were aimed at securing his support for the forthcoming Budgam by-election.
The Budgam seat was vacated after Omar Abdullah decided to step down. Insiders within the party suggest that Nasir Aslam Wani might be considered as a candidate for the by-election, with Mehdi’s endorsement being critical for a cohesive campaign.
A senior NC leader stated, “The meeting with Agha Ruhullah Mehdi is part of a reconciliation process. The party is committed to addressing his concerns and ensuring that he remains aligned with the broader goals of the National Conference.”
