Modi Government Faces Scrutiny Over Minority Rights Concerns

Washington D.C: Despite mounting international evidence of persecution against religious minorities in India, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains dismissive, labeling critiques as a “foreign agenda” rather than engaging with the pressing issues highlighted by global observers.

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has released a critical report in its 2025 annual review, condemning India’s human rights track record. The report documents severe abuses against religious minorities, restrictions on civil liberties, and the suppression of free speech.

Incidents of violence against Muslims and Christians are on the rise, with reports of lynchings, assaults on religious leaders, and destruction of worship spaces. The USCIRF report criticizes the Indian government’s inaction in tackling these violations, emphasizing the misuse of legal frameworks and the proliferation of hate speech.

Vigilante groups have been implicated in numerous attacks targeting religious minorities. The report details cases of arbitrary arrests of religious leaders and the destruction of places of worship, highlighting a lack of accountability from authorities.

Additionally, the USCIRF report points to a shrinking space for press freedom, with foreign journalists facing intimidation. Thirty journalists recently protested against harassment, accusing Indian authorities of targeting those critical of the government’s approach to minority and human rights.

Christian communities in India have voiced concerns over frequent attacks. Despite over 800 incidents reported in 2024, appeals for protection have gone unheeded by the government. The U.S. State Department has documented these attacks and criticized the government’s lack of response.

The report also addresses India’s authoritarian policies that stifle civil society activities. Laws like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) are highlighted for their use against human rights defenders and dissenting voices. The USCIRF warns of the escalating repression of free speech and the state’s increasing power to silence opposition.

Despite the severity of these allegations, the Modi government dismisses the findings as foreign interference, showing no indication of implementing measures to protect minority rights and civil liberties.
