Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced the launch of an electric bike patrol by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to protect the city’s infrastructure and prevent illegal activities. The initiative aims to monitor and deter illegal road cutting and vandalism of public property, along with addressing the misuse of official vehicles. The introduction of the KMC Vigilance Squad, equipped with 20 electric bikes, is part of broader efforts to enhance operational efficiency while reducing fuel expenses.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the vigilance squad’s formation is in line with the vision of Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to make KMC self-sustainable. Charging stations have been established across various locations to support the use of electric bikes. Mayor Wahab emphasized the importance of transitioning to green energy, highlighting the solarization of the Jamshed Nusserwanjee Mehta Building and ongoing plans to solarize hospitals and pumping stations to cut electricity costs.
Mayor Wahab also addressed national matters, praising the Pakistan Peoples Party’s role in strengthening the country’s diplomatic and defense stance. He criticized the use of banners and posters in the city by Jamaat-e-Islami, arguing that they mislead the public and do not address civic issues. He reaffirmed KMC’s commitment to development and public welfare projects, noting the restoration of Spencer Eye Hospital and improvements in healthcare services.
As the city moves towards sustainable practices, Mayor Wahab assured that more initiatives would follow, including the gradual transition of municipal vehicles to electric power. The cooperation between the Water Corporation and KMC was also highlighted as a step towards the city’s overall betterment.
