Islamabad: The Government of Japan has announced a grant of 21 million Yen (approximately USD 142,500) to the Dopasi Foundation to enhance tuberculosis screening in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Chakwal. This initiative, part of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Program, aims to improve access to early diagnosis and healthcare services for vulnerable communities in these areas.
According to Embassy of Japan In Pakistan, the grant contract was signed by His Excellency Mr. AKAMATSU Shuichi, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, and a representative of the Dopasi Foundation at the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad on September 1st, 2026. The project, titled “The Project for the Procurement of Equipment and Vehicle for Tuberculosis Screening in Two Districts of Punjab Province and Islamabad City,” seeks to address healthcare access challenges for marginalized populations.
The Dopasi Foundation, a humanitarian organization in Pakistan, will use the grant to deploy a Mobile Health Unit in the specified regions. This unit will offer digital chest radiography, TB screening, family planning counseling, and basic health checks to those who face barriers to healthcare access, including daily wage earners and women.
Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Fujifilm have also contributed to the project, equipping a Land Cruiser with a compact X-ray system and AI technology for TB screening. They will also provide technical training to ensure the equipment’s sustainable use.
The project is expected to screen 20,000 individuals annually, reducing the impact of communicable diseases and healthcare access barriers. It aims to enhance socio-economic resilience by preventing health-related financial burdens and saving lives through early diagnosis.
Ambassador AKAMATSU highlighted that human security begins with protecting individual lives, underscoring the importance of access to early diagnosis and basic health services. The Government of Japan remains committed to supporting local NGOs in advancing human security in Pakistan, further strengthening the bilateral relationship.
