Islamabad: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has announced the successful completion of the first phase of its Undergraduate Scholarship Programme for students from Gilgit-Baltistan, achieving a scholarship utilisation ratio of 99.4 percent. This initiative, designed to promote higher education among students in the region, has seen 333 students secure admission in top Pakistani universities, with 312 currently pursuing undergraduate studies and 11 having graduated.
According to Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, the programme surpassed its sanctioned target of 335 scholarships by offering provisional scholarships to 430 candidates, ensuring merit-based selection and maximum outreach. The programme has also achieved a balanced gender ratio, with 182 male and 151 female students benefiting from the scholarships.
The scholarship package includes coverage for tuition fees, hostel charges, and additional allowances for living, books, and travel. This financial support aims to provide students from Gilgit-Baltistan access to quality education in various disciplines at reputable public sector institutions. Initiated in 2021, the programme seeks to equip the youth with education to face future challenges and contribute to the development of their region and the country.
Building on the success of this phase, HEC plans to expand educational opportunities for students from underserved and remote areas of Pakistan.
