ISLAMABAD: The National Steering Committee on Fuel Subsidy has approved a new mechanism for redeeming fuel tokens via SMS in regions without internet connectivity, as part of the Prime Minister’s Special Relief Scheme. This decision was made during a committee meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, aimed at facilitating fuel access in remote areas.

According to Radio Pakistan, the committee’s approval allows fuel stations in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and other provinces to be included in the scheme despite lacking internet access. Officials have been tasked with compiling lists of such stations to expedite their integration into the program.

The committee was briefed on the system’s current operational status, noting that most fuel stations nationwide are participating, with citizens actively redeeming fuel tokens. Registration for the scheme continues through SMS on 9771. The State Bank of Pakistan reported that all payment claims from the past three days have been processed and settled promptly.

Deputy Prime Minister Dar emphasized the importance of including every operational fuel station in the system. He instructed officials to identify and remove permanently closed stations or those solely dealing in diesel to ensure the scheme’s coverage accurately reflects the situation on the ground. Dar also recognized the efforts of provincial administrations and the cooperation of the State Bank of Pakistan in ensuring the relief reaches its intended recipients without interruption.
