Islamabad: Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan chaired a meeting with the Fruit Juice Council and major manufacturers, including Pepsico and Nestlé, to address key challenges in the industry. The discussions focused on strengthening the formal sector against informal competition and resolving tariff-related issues.

Council members highlighted the informal sector’s growing threat, which hampers the formal industry’s ability to meet global standards and expand exports. They emphasized that without government support, the formal sector would face continued disadvantages.

Minister Khan agreed with the council’s concerns, stressing the importance of empowering the formal industry to meet international benchmarks and unlock export potential. He acknowledged global challenges to food security but noted Pakistan’s capacity to withstand these difficulties.

Khan assured participants of the government’s commitment to regular consultations with the industry to effectively address their issues. He appreciated the industry’s eagerness to contribute to national economic growth and welcomed their proposals.

Industry representatives affirmed that with government support in reducing tariff burdens and addressing informal sector encroachment, they could boost exports. They identified the Gulf, European Union, Central Asia, and Americas as high-potential markets for Pakistan’s food and beverage exports.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to closer coordination between the government and the formal food and juice industry, aiming to build a stronger export base and enhance Pakistan’s global trade presence.
