Chaman Negotiation Committee Pursues Peace, Sets Clear Boundaries for Protests

Chaman, In a significant meeting held on June 12, 2024, local authorities and tribal leaders in Chaman convened under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Captain (R) Raja Athar Abbas to reaffirm their commitment to maintaining peace and addressing local grievances through dialogue and cooperation. The session, part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the city, focused on negotiating peaceful resolutions and establishing clear guidelines for public demonstrations.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Balochistan, the negotiation mediation committee meeting, which included influential community members and tribal elders such as former provincial minister Haji Nasir Ahmed Bacha Khan Achakzai and Noorzai community chief Haji Faizullah Khan Noorzai, discussed the recent tensions involving public disturbances like arson and stone-pelting. The discussions also covered strategies for the peaceful release of individuals detained during these incidents.

Deputy Commissioner Abbas emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to sustain peace and constructively address the region’s challenges on various forums. He asserted the government’s stance on protests, stating that while legitimate demands will be defended, any actions or narratives against the state under the guise of protest are unacceptable and will prompt governmental action.

Furthermore, Abbas highlighted the balance between enforcement and respect for civil rights, asserting that no innocent citizens would be targeted unjustly. However, legal measures are set against those who compromise state property or public safety. He also noted that the local leaders play a vital role in resolving community issues and ensuring their cooperation is crucial for long-term peace.

Additionally, the Deputy Commissioner announced stricter measures against illegal gatherings, referencing the existing enforcement of Section 144, which prohibits unauthorized rallies and assemblies. He warned that any violations would lead to serious legal consequences.

The meeting concluded with a unified commitment to continued peace efforts and a crackdown on illegal residents in the district, underscoring the administration’s resolve to verify citizenship during random checks and deport those without proper documentation.
