Islamabad: The recent visit by Bangladesh’s Interim Prime Minister Dr. Muhammad Younus to China underscores a significant shift in South Asian diplomatic relations, as Bangladesh strengthens its ties with China and Pakistan, leaving India diplomatically isolated.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Bangladesh is moving away from what it terms ‘fake unity’ with India, instead opting to enhance relations with major global players like China and Pakistan. This pivot comes as Bangladesh distances itself from India, a nation that had been a supporter of Sheikh Hasina’s government despite controversies.
Dr. Younus’ visit to China from March 26-29 represents a pivotal moment in this diplomatic realignment. Earlier this year, discussions between China’s Foreign Minister and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, as well as talks with China’s Vice Foreign Minister and Bangladesh’s new Ambassador, have further strengthened these ties. Additionally, a 21-member Bangladeshi delegation, comprising political figures, journalists, academics, and student leaders, visited China recently. Pakistan has also actively sought to enhance its engagement with Bangladesh.
Political analysts observe that Bangladesh is now stepping away from India’s influence after years of close ties under Sheikh Hasina’s regime. This move indicates a strategic shift in the region’s geopolitical landscape, with Bangladesh building stronger alliances with China and Pakistan.
As Bangladesh forges new partnerships, its decision to move away from India’s orbit highlights a significant diplomatic shift. With India now facing diplomatic isolation, the dynamics within South Asia are evolving, as Bangladesh enhances its role in the region.
