APHC Condemns Unlawful Detentions in Kashmir

Srinagar: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference has voiced alarm over the ongoing detention of thousands of Kashmiris, who are incarcerated for opposing India’s control over the region. The APHC claims the detentions are part of a broader strategy to silence political dissent.

A statement from APHC spokesman Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas, shared by Kashmir Media Service, criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government for allegedly extending the detentions of Kashmiri leaders and others. The APHC accused the authorities of using incarceration as a tool of political reprisal.

Since August 5, 2019, the APHC reports that thousands, including youth and women, have been detained. Prominent figures such as APHC Chairman Masarrat Aalam Butt and others remain imprisoned. The APHC urged international human rights groups to advocate for their release.

The statement also highlighted concerns over the treatment of prisoners, noting inadequate food, medical care, and restricted family visits.

The APHC paid tribute to Ashfaq Majid Wani, a significant figure in Kashmir’s liberation movement, on the anniversary of his death. The organization asserted that India is violating the Geneva Convention by continuing these detentions and called for global intervention.

The APHC reiterated its commitment to the Kashmiri people’s struggle for self-determination, despite what it described as repressive measures by the Indian government.
