Bengaluru, July 18, 2023 (PPI-OT): The opposition parties in India have decided to collectively contest 2024 elections to defeat the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The decision to this effect was taken by 26 opposition parties at a meeting in Bengaluru.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in a tweet said the 26 opposition parties have decided to give a new name to their alliance, which will be known as Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (India). Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, the war is now between India and NDA, Narendra Modi vs India, their ideology and India.
Indian media quoting sources said that the leaders were giving further details of the deliberations and they have signed a pact in this regard over seat sharing and the creation of state-wise committees. They discussed politics of hatred, the failures of the Central government and raised their voices against the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they said. Kharge in his tweet said, “I am happy that 26 parties are present in Bengaluru to work unitedly. Together, we are in government in 11 states today. The BJP did not get 303 seats by itself. It used the votes of its allies and came to power and then discarded them.”
The Congress chief said, the BJP President and their leaders are running from state to state to patch up with their old allies. They are scared that the unity they see here will result in their defeat next year, he said. Kharge pointed out that every institution is being turned into a weapon against the opposition. “Our intention in this meeting is not to gain power for ourselves. It is to protect Democracy, Secularism, and Social Justice. Let us resolve to take India back to the path of progress, welfare, and true democracy,” he added.
The leaders of opposition parties expressed concerns over misuse of the constitutional provisions by the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi) said that the meeting is important because Narendra Modi got a chance to rule the country for 9 to 10 years. “He has made a mess of almost every sector. He has created hatred amongst the people. The economy is in shambles. There is inflation and, unemployment. It is time the country gets rid of him. So, everyone needs to come together,” he said.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee said, “I think this is a good and fruitful meeting. This is a concept of constructive decision.” National Conference leader in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah said, “I think it is important that we put up a united stand on everything that is going wrong in India. Particularly, the way in which the Constitution is eroded, the way in which secular fabric is being undermined.”
Rashtriya Janata Dal RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said that the country and democracy needs to be saved. People’s Democratic Party Chief in IIOJK, Mehbooba Mufti, said that India’s Constitution is under danger. Samajwadi Party chief and former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said, “People know how political leaders are targeted. I say two thirds of the people of the country are against the BJP. This time we are coming together to ensure the defeat of BJP.” CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said India is under tremendous assault and it needs to be saved.
