Islamabad: Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, has initiated the development of a comprehensive roadmap aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s performance on governance indicators. The plan will focus on identifying immediate, medium-, and long-term measures to address the nation’s governance challenges.

According to Press Information Department, the directive was given during the inaugural meeting of the Prime Minister’s Committee on Key Governance Indicators, chaired by Senator Tarar. The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik, Secretary Finance, Secretary Cabinet Division, and other key federal and provincial officials.

The participants were briefed on Pakistan’s recent strides in macroeconomic stabilization and its positive impact on credit ratings, which are closely linked to governance indicators. It was noted that the country’s credit rating had shown improvement over the last two years due to these stabilization efforts.

The briefing highlighted that the data used in credit rating assessments typically lags by about two years, which delays the reflection of reform impacts in international ratings. The interconnectedness of economic stability, enhanced credit ratings, reduced borrowing costs, and stronger governance was underscored.

Senator Tarar instructed a detailed review of governance indicators’ sub-components and assessment methodologies. He emphasized the need for practical reforms tailored to Pakistan’s unique circumstances and institutional framework.

The meeting resolved to establish a Sub-Committee of subject specialists to focus on governance indicators. This Sub-Committee will evaluate key aspects and provide recommendations and a roadmap to the main committee within a week.

The Federal Minister also called for an interim report detailing measures that can be implemented immediately, with clearly defined responsibilities at both federal and provincial levels. Additionally, he stressed the importance of proposing measures to enhance Pakistan’s international standing and credibility alongside overall governance improvements.
