Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, led a high-level meeting to assess the country’s monsoon conditions and disaster-response operations, while directing early preparations for Monsoon 2027. According to Press Information Department, the meeting focused on a comprehensive climate-resilience audit and quick processing of flood-protection schemes through a Green Channel, alongside a review of rehabilitation efforts with quarterly implementation checks.

The discussions, attended by representatives from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), and various federal and provincial departments, highlighted the need for proactive planning against climate change impacts. The Minister emphasized replacing reactive measures with thorough technical assessments and planning. He called for a district-wise audit of areas affected by floods in 2022, 2025, and the ongoing season, identifying infrastructure obstructions and inadequacies.

The meeting also addressed plastic waste as a significant factor in urban flooding, calling for a nationwide awareness campaign and stricter enforcement of polythene bag restrictions. As Monsoon 2026 enters its withdrawal phase, the NDMA reported on the status of relief operations and the development of sustainable reconstruction models. A comprehensive Monsoon 2026 closure report is expected by the third week of September, documenting lessons learned and operational progress.
