UN Human Rights Chief Raises Alarm Over Israeli Military Actions in Rafah

Geneva, The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has expressed grave concerns over the potential for a full-fledged military incursion by Israel into Rafah, warning of the dire consequences for the 1.5 million Palestinians living there. With Rafah’s residents confined against the Egyptian border and no avenue for escape, Turk foresees a tragic outcome where civilians, predominantly children and women, could suffer massive casualties.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the situation in Gaza, already dire due to previous conflicts, stands to worsen dramatically with the proposed Israeli operation into Rafah. Turk highlighted the catastrophic implications such an incursion would have on humanitarian aid delivery, with severe risks of starvation and famine looming over the population, especially in Gaza’s north. The High Commissioner reiterated warnings against any actions that breach the laws of war, emphasizing that the operation into Rafah might lead to further atrocity crimes.

Turk called on Israel to adhere to international humanitarian law and the binding orders of the International Court of Justice. He stressed the importance of accountability for those who disregard international law. With a firm call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and a collective push towards a political resolution, Turk urged the international community and influential parties to take action to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
