UN Chief Urged to Intervene in Kashmir Repression

Islamabad: The Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR) has appealed to the United Nations to address the ongoing repression in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The request, detailed in a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, calls for intervention against actions by Indian authorities in the region.

The letter, sent by KIIR Chairman Altaf Hussain Wani, highlights a systematic crackdown on pro-freedom leaders, unlawful seizures of property, and suppression of civil liberties. Wani describes a landscape where arbitrary arrests, raids, travel restrictions, surveillance, and prolonged incarcerations have become commonplace under the current Indian administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Wani criticized the application of laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Public Safety Act, and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. He argues that these laws are used to silence dissent and limit freedoms, suggesting that the Indian government is using the guise of democracy to conduct its campaign of repression.

The KIIR’s letter calls on the UN and the international community to take immediate action to hold India accountable for its actions in the territory and to protect the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people.
