Senator Zehri Calls for Action on Abduction of Pakistani Seafarers and Cybercrime

Islamabad: Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri has expressed concerns over the abduction of Pakistani seafarers, delays in compensation for affected families, and the rise of cybercrime, urging authorities to take practical measures. During a meeting of the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights, chaired by Senator Zehri, discussions focused on the challenges faced by affected citizens and their families.

According to Senate of Pakistan, the meeting held at Parliament House addressed issues including the hostage-taking of Pakistani seafarers off Somalia’s coast, financial fraud involving cryptocurrency, and the exposure of students to fraudulent schemes. The Committee emphasized the need for timely action on complaints, effective investigations, and the provision of justice to victims. Senator Zehri directed authorities to submit comprehensive reports on compensation payments and medical facilities for injured crew members, ensuring the Committee could monitor progress effectively.

The absence of representatives from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was noted with displeasure, as their participation was deemed crucial for resolving grievances related to overseas education and alleged fraud. The Chairperson underscored the importance of coordination among institutions and called for awareness campaigns to protect young people from cybercrime. The Committee also reviewed cases of financial fraud linked to overseas education, stressing the need for thorough investigations and effective legal action against those involved.
