Seminar Highlights Unresolved Kunan Poshpora Tragedy

Islamabad: A seminar organized by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir chapter in Islamabad brought renewed attention to the Kunan Poshpora incident, a decades-old tragedy that continues to haunt its victims and the region. The event, chaired by senior Hurriyat leader Muhammad Farooq Rahmani, aimed to shed light on the unresolved issues stemming from the incident.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, speakers at the seminar expressed deep remorse over the Kunan Poshpora gang rape incident, condemning it as a blemish on India’s democratic claims. They emphasized that, even after 34 years, the victims remain without justice, while those responsible remain unpunished.

The seminar’s speakers highlighted the persistence of painful memories associated with the incident among Kashmiris, attributing the lack of accountability to legal immunities granted to Indian soldiers. They argued that such protections fuel ongoing human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir.

Furthermore, the speakers accused India of using sexual violence as a tool of war in the region. They paid tribute to the sacrifices made by Kashmiri women and vowed to honor their struggles by continuing to seek justice.

The seminar concluded with a call to the international community, urging them to pressure India into reopening the Kunan Poshpora case to ensure accountability and justice. Among the attendees were notable figures such as Azad Kashmir Minister Nabeela Ayub and Ambassador Naila Chohan, alongside various senior Hurriyat leaders and activists.
