Islamabad: The world requires a more inclusive and effective global governance system to address emerging geopolitical dynamics and ensure the Global South has a significant role in international decision-making, stated Sardar Masood Khan, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, China, and the United Nations, and former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan shared these insights during a discussion on the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) hosted by CGTN, coinciding with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He highlighted the existing international system’s lack of representation and equity, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, bloc politics, and unresolved conflicts, necessitating urgent reforms.
Sardar Masood Khan argued that the post-World War II international order is facing unique challenges, as recent wars and crises have exposed the limits of current multilateral mechanisms. He called for a new approach to restore stability and uphold international norms, emphasizing China’s Global Governance Initiative as a framework for a more integrated and multilateral system.
He emphasized the need for greater representation of the Global South in international decision-making, recognizing the region’s significant population. He advocated for a global governance model that considers diverse countries and cultures, challenging the dominance of Western historical perspectives and acknowledging contributions from Islamic, Chinese, and other civilizations.
Discussing China’s role, Sardar Masood Khan praised Beijing’s leadership in economic development, connectivity, technology, and conflict prevention. He cited the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as examples of successful cooperation fostering infrastructure, employment, and economic growth.
On United Nations reform, he noted that while comprehensive changes could be prolonged, incremental steps could create momentum for significant transformation. He suggested that reforms should target the Security Council and other major UN institutions, promoting sovereign equality, civilizational harmony, development, and security as key elements of a new global governance ecosystem.
Sardar Masood Khan concluded by urging Pakistan to actively engage in shaping the emerging international order, leveraging its geographical, human, and economic assets to enhance its strategic and diplomatic influence.
