Minister Calls for Enhanced CIMMYT Partnership to Boost Wheat Productivity in Pakistan

Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, has urged for a stronger collaboration with CIMMYT to enhance Pakistan’s wheat production through improved genetics, advanced research facilities, and modern production technologies. He stressed the importance of achieving not only self-sufficiency but also a sustainable surplus to aid international markets and food-deficit nations.

According to Press Information Department, these statements were made during a meeting with Dr. Flavio Breseghello, Director of CIMMYT’s Global Wheat Program, and Dr. Sajid Ali, Senior Scientist and Country Representative for Pakistan. Hussain underscored the necessity of boosting wheat production to meet the demands of a population of approximately 260 million. Citing the recent need for wheat imports, he pointed to the productivity gap that could be closed through enhanced seed quality, robust research, and the adoption of modern agricultural technologies.

The Minister outlined the upcoming National Wheat Policy as a pivotal framework for enhancing production and incentivizing farmers. He emphasized that research partnerships and practical innovations are crucial to achieving these goals amid rising input costs and climate challenges.

Acknowledging the longstanding CIMMYT-Pakistan partnership, Hussain praised its historical role in the nation’s agricultural development while advocating for a future focus on cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions to further boost wheat productivity.

Hussain called for greater CIMMYT support in diversifying germplasm, genomic approaches, and advanced breeding methods. He emphasized the importance of well-equipped research institutions and skilled scientists in developing climate-resilient and nutrient-enriched wheat varieties.

CIMMYT’s support in strengthening national agricultural research through upgraded laboratories and modern equipment was also welcomed by the Minister. These investments, he noted, would enhance field research quality, wheat breeding, and seed processing, enabling reliable scientific data generation.

Dr. Sajid Ali briefed the Minister on 2026 activities celebrating six decades of partnership, including upgrades to laboratory facilities and provision of research farm machinery to national partners. Training for scientists and establishment of seed banks were highlighted as key initiatives supporting vulnerable farming communities.

Dr. Breseghello emphasized the importance of genetic improvement in wheat yield growth and discussed potential collaboration opportunities, including hybrid wheat development and deeper engagement with Pakistani research institutions.

The meeting concluded with the Minister expressing the Government’s commitment to facilitating CIMMYT’s contributions to the agriculture sector and finalizing a Host Country Agreement to solidify cooperation. Hussain reiterated the Government’s dedication to strengthening agricultural research, innovation, and climate resilience, aiming to bridge Pakistan’s wheat productivity gap and secure food security improvements.
