Lahore: The provincial Apex Committee, led by Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, convened on Tuesday to assess the law and order situation and security preparations across Punjab. Officials provided briefings on measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property in the province.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the meeting highlighted satisfaction with the collaboration among security agencies and acknowledged the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Hub at the Provincial Intelligence Fusion and Threat Assessment Centre as a significant advancement in the timely sharing of information. The AI Hub and PIFTAC were inaugurated earlier this month to enhance threat assessment and coordination efforts among security agencies.
The chief minister acknowledged the achievements in ongoing operations against terrorist activities and lauded the Pakistan Army’s professional conduct in actions against threats labeled as Fitna al-Hindustan. The gathering also honored Captain Abu Zarr Farooq, Lt Shiras Babar, and other individuals who lost their lives during Operation Zarb-i-Labbaik, with prayers offered for the deceased.
The Lahore Corps Commander expressed satisfaction with the institutions’ performance during the meeting. Additionally, the committee was informed about 93 new projects in riverine areas aimed at enhancing social infrastructure, including the establishment of smart police stations and checkpoints, and the construction of a steel bridge costing Rs620 million. Skill-development programs are also planned to create employment opportunities for residents in these areas.
Efforts to ensure the removal of illegally residing foreign nationals from Punjab were also discussed. Chief Minister Sharif emphasized the importance of institutional coordination and prioritizing public safety over personal interests. She noted a decline in street crime, which has improved public security perception, and reported the dismissal of 718 police personnel for corruption.
The chief minister praised the efforts contributing to peace in riverine areas and announced a development package exceeding Rs30 billion for health, education, and security. She welcomed a significant cricket tournament in the region, noting public and official participation as positive.
Proactive policing and resource allocation, including technological advancements and body-worn cameras for police, have contributed to the decline in crime rates. The expanded Safe City system across Punjab further supports these efforts.
Sharif stressed the importance of closing security gaps and taking preventive measures despite challenges. She paid tribute to the armed forces and commended the leadership of the Field Marshal, highlighting the collaborative efforts against terrorism and the international recognition gained from Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos.
The chief minister also addressed the economic challenges faced by the region, underscoring the government’s focus on balancing security measures with efforts to mitigate inflation and economic hardships.
